Guidance for households

Your local authority will be responsible for most types of waste you produce in your home. If you have any problems with your rubbish collection, you need to contact them. If you hire contractors such as builders or scrap metal merchants who are taking waste away from your property, you must make sure they are a licensed waste carrier. Read our page on 'Your rubbish - new rules' (see link on the left).

If you throw away hazardous wastes, such as paints, oils, television sets and asbestos, you must do this at properly managed waste facilities.Your local council will be able to advise how and where.

If someone has flytipped rubbish in your local area, such as old sofas or fridges, you need to report this to your local authority. Where the flytipping is very serious or it's part of organised crime, we will get involved.
