Dealing with hazardous waste
What is hazardous waste and how do I deal with it?
If you produce, move, receive or dispose of hazardous waste, there are certain procedures you must follow under the Hazardous Waste Regulations. These web pages will guide you through the process of registering as a hazardous waste producer, moving or receiving hazardous waste and how to keep records of what you are doing.
NEW: changes for waste in 2008
- From 1 July 2008, waste with a total organic carbon (TOC) content of more than six per cent will no longer be accepted for landfill.
- From 10 November 2008 all mixing pits for mixing and treating hazardous wastes must cease operating.
- Businesses that produce hazardous wastes with high TOC or send their wastes to mixing pits should talk to their waste contractors about alternative management options.
- We have also made amendments to WM2. We have updated the chemical analysis assessment section to align with chemicals legislation for the assessment of H14 (ecotoxicity) and provided clarification on the direct testing of waste.
