New and updated flood maps show where and what is at risk of flooding.
The Flood Risk Regulations implement the requirements of the European Floods Directive which aims to provide a consistent approach to managing flood risk across Europe. Under the Regulations we have produced Flood Hazard and Flood Risk Maps for England and Wales.
We took this opportunity to review and improve the way we communicate flood risk information. It is now clearer and more accessible, so you can find it, understand it and use it to help manage flood risk. This information will also be important in the preparation of Flood Risk Management Plans.
New and updated Flood Hazard Maps show where is at risk
The interactive Flood Hazard Maps show where is at risk of flooding. They include the extent, depth and velocity of flood water from rivers, sea, surface water and reservoirs for a number of scenarios.
Our National Flood Risk Assessment is the main source of flood risk information for rivers and sea. This shows a more realistic picture of flood risk which takes flood defences into account. This map is known as the Risk of Flooding from Rivers and Sea Map.
We, on behalf of Defra, have produced a surface water flooding map at the national scale. This is called the Risk of Flooding from Surface Water Map. We have worked closely with lead local flood authorities to ensure that this information is as accurate as possible.
We have also modelled the extent of flooding in the unlikely event that a reservoir fails. This will be known as the Risk of Flooding from Reservoirs Map.

New Flood Risk Maps show what is at risk
The Flood Risk Maps show what is at risk of flooding such as people, property, economic activity and natural and historic areas of environmental importance. This information is presented at the River Basin District scale in summary PDF documents.
