The South East Region covers the Thames catchment and a number of smaller catchments around the coastline that drain into the English Channel. The area covers the southern counties of Hampshire, Surrey, Sussex and Kent, all thirty three London Boroughs, and the counties west and north of London including Berkshire, Hertfordshire, Oxfordshire, Gloustershire and Buckinghamshire.
Almost 16 million people live here. The main urban area is the capitol London, with the other major hubs including Reading, Southampton, Portsmouth, Milton Keynes, Swindon and Oxford. The region experiences surface, ground, coastal and river flooding that can affect the population who live in our cities and towns and rural villages.
There are nine major tributaries of the River Thames in London. Most of their floodplains have been heavily developed and flooding can happen very quickly. In contrast, outside of London the rivers are still in a largely natural state. South of the Thames catchment, there are ten major rivers that drain the southern counties in the catchments around the coast.
