We have made great strides to reduce the amount of waste we produce in the North West, recycle and recover more, and send less waste to landfill. There is still a great deal of potential to recover materials we currently discard as waste.
People and businesses in the North West produce over 30 million tonnes of waste each year - that's equivalent to filling the JJB stadium 50 times. In around 20 years' time, it is predicted that households in the North West will produce enough rubbish to fill the M60 Manchester ring road waist high each year.
There are now tighter restrictions on what can be disposed of to landfill. A major challenge for the North West is to find the best ways to make use of, or if necessary dispose of the huge amounts of waste produced in the region.
We want to encourage people to reduce, re-use and recycle.
