State of the Environment - North West

Read about the North West State of the Environment.

Flood defence to wildlife conservation, waste management to water quality - the Environment Agency has a wide role in a Region as large and diverse as the North West.

Here you can read more detailed information about some of that work.

  • Air

Emissions to air from major industrial sites in the North West have reduced substantially, but traffic is causing air quality problems in our major cities.

  • Business, industry and regulation

Protecting the environment and preventing pollution makes good business sense. Unfortunately, we still have to deal with around 1,900 pollution incidents in the North West each year, and we prosecute around 35 companies.

  • Climate change

It's an inescapable fact: our planet is warming up. Records show that temperatures around the world have risen steadily since 1900, and this is true for the North West too.

  • Flooding

We currently offer an appropriate flood warning service to over 100,000 properties in the North West. To find out if you or your property are at risk, ring our 24-hour Floodline on 08459 88 11 88.

  • Land

Our industrial heritage has meant that the North West has more derelict land than many other regions. We're working with partners to protect and improve the Region's land for future use.

  • Waste

Reduce, Reuse, Recycle! The North West produces more household waste per person than any other region in England. If we carry on at this rate, we'll run out of landfill space in less than 10 years time.

  • Water

The North West's water quality is now the best it's been since the industrial revolution but we still have a long way to go.

  • Wildlife

Salmon are back in the Mersey and otters are in our rivers again - we're working with partners protecting and creating habitats to preserve the Region's diverse wildlife.
