Read about our monthly water situation report and weekly rainfall and river flow summary.
We routinely measure and monitor a range of hydrological parameters to assess the water situation across England and Wales. We do this for:
- the amount of rain that falls;
- how dry the soils are (and how much rain they can soak up);
- the amount of water flowing in rivers;
- the amount of water stored below ground in aquifers and above ground in reservoirs.
We use our own data and that provided by the Met Office and water companies to build up a comprehensive picture of the water situation across England and Wales.
This helps us assess the risk of drought or flood events occurring so that we are prepared when they do happen. Follow the links below for more information on:
On the 10th of each month we report on the water situation across England and Wales. These reports provide information for the preceding month on:
- rainfall;
- soil moisture deficit;
- river flows;
- groundwater levels; and
- reservoir stocks.
We also produce a weekly summary of rainfall and river flows across England and Wales. We publish this here every Thursday. These provide an up-to-date snapshot of the rainfall and river flow situation.
