Water Resources - current state and future pressures

In this report we illustrate the state of the water resources in England and Wales in 2008 and highlight the pressures affecting the water environment and water supplies in the future

Water Resources in England and Wales - current state and future pressures

In this report we present maps and information to illustrate the current state of water resources in England and Wales including:

  • how the availability of water varies from place to place
  • how water is abstracted for various uses
  • how water is used to supply people with water

We also look at the future pressures we face that will affect how much water will be available and how we use it including:

  • climate change
  • population growth
  • diffuse pollution
  • water for wildlife and wetlands

We launched our Water Resources Strategy for England and Wales on 30 March 2009. It covers the actions that we believe need to be taken to ensure that there is enough water for people and wildlife in the face of these pressures.
