East of England

Site inputs

10.9 million tonnes of waste were disposed of in landfill sites and over 6.7 million tonnes went to transfer and treatment facilities in 2007.

Waste landfilled decreased by three per cent between 2006 and 2007, whilst inputs to transfer and treatment facilities increased by six per cent and 18 per cent respectively.

Between 2000/01 and 2007, inputs to landfill decreased by 20 per cent, whilst transfer facilities increased by 41 per cent.  Waste through treatment facilities increased by a third to two million ronnes.

Permitted waste incineration facilities in the region handled nearly 630,000 tonnes of waste during 2007.

Waste management capacity

At the end of 2007 the East of England had four years of landfill life across the region of non hazardous wastes.

The region also had 950,000 tonnes of capacity at permitted waste incineration facilities.  None of this was available for municipal wastes.

Hazardous waste

The East of England produced 390,000 tonnes of hazardous waste in 2007, a less than one per cent increase on 2006.  45 per cent of this consisted of oil and oil/water mixtures and construction/demolition and asbestos wastes.

380,000 tonnes of hazardous waste was deposited in the region in 2007, making the East of England an exporter of hazardous waste.  This is a less than one per cent increase on 2006.  The East of England has no permitted hazardous landfills, but has eight non hazardous sites with the capacity to dispose of stable non reactive hazardous wastes e.g. asbestos, gypsum, in a separate cell.
