Water Framework Directive (WFD) classification results

River Basin Plans are published every six years. The classification results from the first cycle plans, published in 2009 are shown here along with interim updates.

2012 progress update

Our latest results based on surveys taken mainly between 2009 and 2011, show no significant change (deterioration or improvement) in the number of surface water bodies at good status in England and Wales compared to when we first reported in 2009.

Please note that simple comparison with the 2009 baseline results is not possible as differences could be due to methodological changes, for instance using data from a greater number of quality indicators, rather than genuine environmental change. A true assessment of progress will be made in 2015/6 when the current river basin cycle is complete.
