Waste management 2005

Summary

This update is the second of our new annual reports on waste data and marks the move to calendar year reporting to align with European reporting requirements. The report is designed to make the data we routinely collect from permitted sites easily accessible to local authorities, regional planning bodies, government, and the waste management industry to help in their planning and monitoring of waste management provision.

Key Messages

• Our reliance on landfill is decreasing; landfill disposal has fallen slowly but steadily and is down 15% since 2000/1.
• Available landfill capacity continues to fall.
• Inputs to licensed treatment facilities have increased significantly since 2000/1.

Hazardous Waste 2005

• We introduced a new hazardous waste database in 2005 to support the new regulations and reporting requirements. This has meant two separate sets of hazardous waste data were generated which are not directly comparable. We will release the first full year's dataset under the new reporting system (for 2006) in Autumn 2007.

Emerging Issues

• Remaining landfill capacity at licensed sites has fallen continuously since 2000/1. Capacity is limited in London and East of England.

• The number of treatment and transfer facilities has begun to increase as has the quantity of waste they are taking. These changes are more apparent in the South East than elsewhere in England and Wales.
