Adapting to climate change programme

Information on our new adapting to climate change programme.

What's changed?

From 1 October 2011, we took on a new role as the Government’s delivery body for climate change adaptation in England. This role will build on the work of UKCIP, based at Oxford University. The Environment Agency is already one of the leading public bodies in preparing for climate change. Our new programme will complement our existing roles and responsibilities and is being developed closely with the Government's first National Adaptation Programme for the UK.

For more information on our existing role access our adaptation planning pages

For further information on the National Adaptation Programme and the National Climate Change Risk assessment, which Government published on 26 January 2012 to inform the development of the programme, please visit Defra's website.

How can this programme help you?

This programme consists of:

  • a web-based information service will give you access to the latest climate science and provide tools and advice to help you plan for climate change
  • tailored support to help key sectors build resilience to climate change. We'll be focussing on the following themes: business and services, infrastructure and built environment, health and wellbeing, natural environment and forestry and farming, local government

  • Climate information to help get you started
  • Sector information

We are also working in partnership with Climate UK and the Climate Change Partnerships in England to understand what action is needed locally to help business and the natural environment respond to the particular pressures faced in different parts of the country.

Access our Programme summary to find out more about the programmes aims and objectives.

Where are we now?

We want to work with others to design a programme that reflects what customers need.  We are asking the views of customers, partners and government departments to help inform the programme.  We will use this information to:

  • shape our online information service and ensure a smooth transition from the existing service
  • scope more sectoral specific support

The full programme will be in place by April 2012.  In the meantime, we are working closely with UKCIP to ensure that existing services continue to be available.
