Week commencing 12 November 2007, the Environment Agency will be visiting or writing to a thousand West Midlands households asking them for help in putting together information about this summer’s flooding.
Our principal responsibilities relate to flooding from rivers and the sea so, usually, after a flood incident, we concentrate on collecting data relating to these sources of flooding. This summer’s flooding was different. Surface water and sewer flooding caused significant damage so, this time, we are collecting information on those as well.
The information people give us will help us to understand the impact of flooding better, identify ways in which public bodies and the water companies can work more closely together for the benefit of the public, and enable more comprehensive, integrated and efficient flood risk management.
Specialist interviewers, working on behalf of the Environment Agency, will visit selected households asking residents to complete a questionnaire designed to generate a flood history for their area. If people are out, they will leave the questionnaire, together with a pre-paid envelope, for residents to complete and post back to them by the end December.
Our consultants would also be interested in any other information people may have relating to previous flooding. If people cannot help, we would be grateful if they would pass the questionnaire on to a friend or colleague who might have more information.
Personal details such as name, address and contact numbers will be treated as confidential and will be used only by the Environment Agency and its consultants for the purpose of the flooding survey. We can reassure anyone taking part that under no circumstances will their personal details be given to a third party.
Area Flood Risk Manager, Anthony Crowther, says: “Each flood is different and people’s experiences of this summer’s floods will help us to understand better how the flooding developed. People whose homes flooded will have information that is unique and their help in completing the questionnaire would be invaluable. It will help us and our professional partners to understand better how flooding can develop and improve the way it is managed in future.”
For those asked to take part in the survey, further information is available from Yolande Jones, Flood Risk Mapping & Data Management Officer, Environment Agency Offices, Welshpool Road, Shelton, Shrewsbury SY3 8BB, Tel: 08708 506 506, E-mail: yolande.jones@environment-agency.gov.uk
