Graduate & Foundation Degree programmes

Water sustains life. But increasingly, water threatens life too. We work tirelessly to help reduce the threat of flood, coastal erosion and pollution, and our Civil Engineers are crucial to this if we’re to succeed. Their work helps to save lives and livelihoods. They help to protect 5 million people, 2.2 million homes and 185,000 businesses currently at risk from flooding. In short, they play a central role in one of the most complex and exciting engineering challenges of modern times.

Is there anywhere more important you could take your career?

You could join us and help to protect the millions of people at risk from flooding in England and Wales. Our Graduate and Foundation Degree programmes in Flood & Coastal Risk Engineering will train you to use your engineering skills and knowledge where it really matters.

Flood and Coastal Erosion Risk Engineering Graduate Programmes

We currently run graduate programmes for BEng and MEng graduates. Both programmes last between three and four years - once you’ve successfully completed the programme, you will be well placed to become either a qualified Chartered Engineer (MEng students) or an Incorporated Engineer (BEng students).

Taking on a mix of internal and external assignments, each lasting three months to a year, you’ll build skills in asset management, project feasibility, planning, design, project management and site supervision. You’ll move across many different activities within Flood and Coastal Erosion Risk Management, gaining huge exposure and getting involved in a wide range of exciting projects. A Supervising Civil Engineer and a Delegated Engineer will oversee your work and advise you on a day-to-day basis. Once you’ve completed the training programme, you’ll have the opportunity to apply for a wide range of professionally qualified roles at the Environment Agency.

Recruitment for the graduate programme is currently closed but you can register your interest for our 2010 intake by sending your name and contact details to:

River and Coastal Risk Engineering Foundation Degree

The two year Foundation Degree, co-created with the University of the West of England, will provide a perfect start to a career in River and Coastal Engineering. Comprising two days a week studying and three days spent training on real life projects, you’ll learn everything you need to turn your ambition into a rewarding and worthwhile engineering career.

You will gain real on-the-job training with our Flood and Coastal Risk Management teams in one of our offices. During this time you’ll gain exposure to a wide range of areas, applying your mathematical skills to real life situations. You’ll gain hands-on experience as well as a recognised qualification and receive a £12,000 annual training allowance, which is tax and National Insurance free. We’ll also pay for your tuition fees and university expenses.

To succeed, you’ll need to pass tests that underline your ability in Maths and/or Science. So, we’ll expect you to have a minimum of five GCSEs (or equivalent) including Maths and English at grade C or above plus have (or be expecting) 160 UCAS tariff points including at least one technical, science or maths A-level (or equivalent). Alternatively, you will have some recent relevant work experience such as construction, landscaping, engineering, data processing or general manufacturing. You will also have undertaken some further development such as NVQs, IT training, H&S or understanding management procedures – this will have been professionally assessed.

Once you’ve completed the training programme, you’ll graduate with FdSc River and Coastal Engineering. You will also be invited to apply for a permanent post and top-up your Foundation Degree to BSc River and Coastal Engineering. It’s a fantastic way to kick-start your engineering career with us and gain a university qualification, without incurring any of the debt associated with a traditional university course.
