Middlesbrough Clean Becks campaign

Middlesbrough’s becks are an important part of the town’s life, offering welcome corridors of open space for local residents. They are also home to an array of wildlife, including the water vole, one of the UK’s most endangered species.Becks in the spring

In partnership with Middlesbrough Council and the Tees Valley Wildlife Trust, and Middlesbrough Football Club, we are running the Clean Becks campaign.

The campaign aims to inform local residents about work that is currently underway, and to collect opinions on how future works could improve the becks for everyone.

Residents will be kept informed via regular newsletters. In addition, a programme of free community events will be staged throughout the year to help residents enjoy and interact with the becks more.

Boro mascot prize winner gets star treatment

Jack Johnston meets players Marvin Emnes (left) and Jeremie AliadiereMiddlesbrough pupil Jack Johnston, 11, of St Pius X Primary School, won his dream prize recently to be mascot for the day at Boro’s home game against Queens Park Rangers. He received star treatment; going behind the scenes at Riverside Stadium and meeting the football team.  Jack scooped the top prize in the Clean Becks campaign’s poster design competition, run for primary schools across Middlesbrough.

Mike McNulty, project manager for the Environment Agency said: 'Our campaign is about working with people from across Middlesbrough, including local communities and young people. This competition was about raising awareness of the importance of looking after our environment, amongst our younger audiences. Jack’s design was an accurate illustration of life around the town’s becks.

'Through this competition, primary school children have been encouraged to think about their urban environment, ask questions about their local beck and demonstrate their thoughts through art. Middlesbrough Football Club continues to add value to the partnership by raising awareness of how local people and their fans can keep the becks clean and make greater use of the outdoors.'

The Clean Becks Campaign is part of the Environment Agency’s Tees Valley Project.
