We have adopted a strategy for managing flood risk in the Roding catchment, which stretches from Stansted Airport in the north, to the River Thames at Dagenham in the south.
The River Roding has a long history of flooding. More than 1500 homes and businesses close to the river are at risk, mostly in the southern part of the Roding catchment, in areas like Woodford and south Redbridge. In 2000, more than 300 properties were affected by flooding in the Woodford area.
We published our recommendations for managing flood risk in the Roding catchment in 2011. We have been in touch with everyone we originally consulted about the strategy to let them know the outcome of the consultation.
We adopted the strategy (approved by Defra) in 2012. We are now beginning to put the recommendations into practice.
The Woodford Flood Alleviation Scheme is the first part of the strategy to be started. Other parts of the strategy are now being developed and we will add further information here as they occur.
