We have automatically added households and businesses to our flood warning service. If you have received a telephone message or letter about this you will now receive recorded telephone messages when flood warnings are issued for your area.

Frequently asked questions about automatic flood warnings

1. Why have you added me to your flood warning service?

Your address is in an area at risk of flooding from rivers or the sea.  This means that you are covered by our flood warning service and will now receive automated telephone messages when flood warnings are issued for your area.  This will give you advance notice of flooding and time to prepare.

2. How did you get my telephone number?

We work with telephone companies who provide us with the landline phone numbers for properties that are at risk of flooding from rivers or the sea. The phone numbers are taken from the system that is used by the emergency services.

We do not hold any personal information about you or your property and your telephone number will only be used to send you flood warnings.

3. What will happen when I get a message?

When a flood warning is issued in your area, you will be sent a recorded message to your telephone number.  This message will tell you that flooding is expected in your area and what actions you should take.  It will also give you our 24 hour Floodline number 0845 988 1188 to call for more information.

4. Can I receive flood warnings to my mobile or by email?

You can receive a more flexible warning service by registering for Floodline Warnings Direct service. This will allow you to receive warnings by email or SMS text and manage your details online.

5. Can I receive flood warnings in Welsh?

You can receive future information and warnings in Welsh by registering for Floodline Warnings Direct service.

6. How can I cancel this service?

We believe that you are at risk from flooding because your address is in a flood risk area. You can use our Flood Map to check whether you are at risk of flooding from the rivers and sea in your area.  Receiving flood warnings can give you advance notice of flooding and time to prepare.

If you don't want to receive flood warnings, please call our 24-hour Floodline service on 0845 988 1188 and ask to be removed from the service.

7. How can I prepare for flooding?

Receiving flood warnings is only the first step in preparing for flooding. Completing a flood  plan will help keep you and your family safe during flood and preparing your property for flooding will help reduce the damage flooding could cause to your home.
