Roles and responsibilities in managing drought
Who does what when it comes to managing drought?
We are the statutory body that has a duty to manage water resources in England and Wales.
Defra and the Welsh Government develop the legislation for drought management and make directions to water companies about their drought plans.
Some water companies are investing in long-term mains replacement programmes to reduce leakage. Ofwat have set annual leakage targets for each water company through to 2015 and will take action if water companies fail to deliver.
