Station description
Compound Crump weir 52.4 m wide with central low flow crest 7m wide. No cableway. Weir is unlikely to become non-modular; no by-passing but overtops left bank (contained on right) and can surge up Deepdale Beck. Gravel accumulation around inlet pipe alleviated in 1966 by raising inlet pipe. Inlet pipe broken and replaced 2001; rating reviewed 1998 with hydraulic model but no change.
-
Rating development
Theoretical, with check gaugings up to medium flows; extrapolated above 0.7 m.
-
Indicative suitability for QMED
Yes - Formal structure that fully contains most flows.
-
Indicative suitability for pooling
Yes - Structure contains most flows; Consistent with Middleton upstream and Broken Scar downstream.
-
Catchment description
Predominantly upland catchment of 509.2 km2 developed mostly on Carboniferous Limestone (sandstone, shale and limestone) and Millstone Grit. Responsive regime.
-
Artificial influences
Six reservoirs in catchment with a total area of 180.7 km2 (35.5% of catchment), progressively influencing during record period (Balderhead 1965, Cow Green 1970). River regulation from Cow Green to support river abstractions and minimum flows; Cow Green operation includes winter flood storage drawdown. Export from direct supply (Lartington); import from Tyne via Kielder Tunnel only in exceptional drought.
