HiFlows UK

Use HiFlows-UK to find flood peak data at river flow gauging stations in the UK.

  • Updated flood peak data at around 1000 river flow gauging stations throughout the UK
  • Additional information about the gauging stations to allow hydrologists to make informed judgements

The data can be used with the statistical flood estimation methods setout in the Flood Estimation Handbook (FEH), which is the basis for most current flood estimation in the United Kingdom.

This website is primarily aimed at experienced flood hydrologists and the webpages assume some knowledge of flood hydrology and the Flood Estimation Handbook.

This is version 3.1.2, released in December 2011, which contains data to 30 September 2009 (end of water year 2008/2009).  It contains corrected catchment centroid and FPEXT values for stations in Northern Ireland and a correction to the peaks-over-threshold (.pt) file for 22003.  This is an update to version 3.1.1, released in July 2011

A note on the previous releases

By using the HiFlows-UK website you automatically agree to our terms & conditions.

The HiFlows-UK data are an updated and enhanced version of the data contained in Volume 3 of the FEH. HiFlows-UK contains significantly more data than the FEH dataset, incorporating the results of subsequent data reviews to improve data quality, and additional information on each station, including the indicative suitability of the data.

HiFlows-UK is a partnership between the UK gauging authorities – the Environment Agency in England and Wales, SEPA in Scotland and the Rivers Agency in Northern Ireland. The data originates from the hydrometric data archives held by these authorities and includes additional data and background information from the National River Flow Archive, held at CEH Wallingford, and the University of Dundee.

The assistance of JBA Consulting in carrying out recent updates to the HiFlow-UK database and facilitating the v2.1.1, v3.02, and v3.1.2 releases is kindly acknowledged.

Locate a gauging station

This displays the full search criteria available. Enter all the information you wish and then press Enter or click on Go (at the bottom of the page). The search criteria are extensive, but you need only complete the boxes you wish. Many gauging stations are not in HiFlows-UK.  There may be alternative ways of spelling some stations, so you could repeat the search with only a key part of the name.

This displays the UK by gauging authority region - click on the region required. The regional maps show the main rivers with the gauging stations as triangles - hovering the mouse over a triangle reveals the river and station name. Click on the triangle to go to that Station Home page.

The file HiFlows-UK Stations v3.1.2 (Excel 1.7Mb) lists all stations and the files available.
