Risk and forecasting

The Environment Agency's risk and forecasting work aims to achieve better environmental regulation and policy based on developing and applying risk assessment and forecasting techniques.

Our focus/activities include:

  • developing new and improved risk assessment techniques
  • comparing risks to prioritise where resources should be allocated
  • developing and applying forecasting techniques, including scenario analysis
  • developing new and improved environmental models
  • dealing with uncertainty (i.e. where risks are uncertain)
  • horizon-scanning – looking ahead to see what issues we will need to address in the future
  • environmental assessment, such as environmental impact assessment and strategic environmental assessment
  • developing techniques to evaluate different options
  • managing related research and development programmes
  • working closely with government departments and other organisations
