What does SEA involve?

An overview of each stage in the SEA process (screening, scoping, assessing, environmental report, and monitoring).

SEA can be broken down into distinct stages or steps. The stages below are based on activities set out in the SEA Directive and the former ODPM’s Guidance - A Practical Guide to the SEA Directive. Each of the links below provides a basic explanation of each stage explaining:

  • its purpose,
  • when it is undertaken,
  • what is undertaken,
  • what outputs are produced, and
  • who may be consulted / involved.

By following links from the pages below you can link to other sections of this site that provide further information on the Environment Agency's role at each stage of SEA, good practice advice, etc.
