The Environment Agency and Natural Resources Wales issue permits for businesses, industry and individuals to carry out certain activities that have the potential to pollute the environment.

When we receive an application for a permit we make that application and other relevant information available to the public. We do this before we decide whether to issue the permit, or what conditions we will attach to it.
After any permit is issued, further information is also made available on the registers. This can typically include monitoring information, details of any breaches of the terms of the permit, any enforcement actions that we have carried out and any applications to vary the terms of the permit.
Please be aware that several results can be displayed for the same registration. This will be due to renewal of the registration or any changes, such as an address change.
Scrap Metal Dealers’ Act 2013
The Scrap Metal Dealers’ Act 2013 came into effect on 1 October 2013. Local authorities issue and enforce scrap metal dealer licenses.

Environmental Permitting Regulations
The Environmental Permitting Regulations that came into force in April 2010 combine the previous Pollution Prevention and Control (PPC) regulations, Waste Management Licensing, Water Discharge consenting, Groundwater consenting and Radioactive Substances Regulation.
The Industrial Emissions Directive
The Industrial Emissions Directive (IED) will replace seven existing Directives that we currently implement through the Environmental Permitting Regulations (EPR): Integrated Pollution Prevention & Control, Large Combustion Plant, Waste Incineration, Titanium Dioxide (three directives) and Solvent Emissions.
The EPRs have been amended to implement the IED in England and Wales and provide a single coherent regime. Documents relating to permitting decisions at newly permitted sites will be available from 7 January 2013, and for existing sites from 7 January 2014.
