We have received complaints of odour emanating from Lidsey landfill site (near Bognor Regis). This page tells you about our role in regulating the site, what we have done so far, and how the community can keep in touch.
Lidsey landfill site is operated by Lidsey Landfill Limited with partners Sita and Veolia. The site is north of Bognor Regis in the Woodgate area, West Sussex.
The site disposes of non-hazardous household, industrial and commercial waste. As the primary regulator, we are responsible for:
- granting or refusing environmental permits
- setting the conditions in the permits
- making sure that permit holders comply with them
It is not fair or reasonable to expect zero odour from any landfill site. However, we are working hard to ensure odour is reduced to a level where it does not cause annoyance.
Public event 17 May 2013
We held a public event at Eastergate Primary School, Church Lane, Eastergate, PO20 3UT on 17 May 2013. Sixty local residents and interested parties came along to a drop-in session and chaired discussion by local MP Nick Herbert. The operator, Lidsey Landfill ltd, were also in attendance.
You can view the Environment Agency’s display materials and the draft minutes from the discussion session below. If you feel that these draft minutes do not reflect what was said at the meeting, then please let us know by calling us on 03708 506 506.
We have collated the feedback that we received from the feedback forms that were available at the event. You asked us to answer some questions that you thought weren’t answered and we have done this in the feedback results document below.
If you are concerned about possible health impacts of landfill sites, please contact your GP or the Health Protection Agency.
Please continue to inform us or Lidsey Landfill Limited if you are affected by odours arising from Lidsey Landfill.
In the first instance, you should contact the landfill site operator directly on their 24-hour hotline number: 0800 064 8887.
If you do not wish to talk directly to the landfill site operator, or if the intensity and duration of odour is offensive to you or is affecting how you use your home or local area, please call our 24-hour incident hotline number: 0800 80 70 60.
These numbers are free to call from a telephone landline.
For reporting odour that is less significant, short in duration or is no longer being experienced (for example, if you wish to notify us that the odour affecting you several hours ago has since stopped), please telephone our National Customer Contact Centre: 03708 506 506.
When reporting odour incidents to us, please use this scale to indicate the intensity of the smell:
0 - No odour
1 - Very faint odour
2 - Faint odour
3 - Distinct odour
4 - Strong odour
5 - Very strong odour
6 - Extremely strong odour
Unfortunately, we are not able to go out on site in response to all reports we receive. Reporting odours through the correct channels will allow us to better prioritise and target when we attend reported incidents of significant odour.
It may not be possible to provide individual responses to all reports we receive through our incident hotline. However, we will update this web page regularly with any findings and actions taken by us and Lidsey Landfill Limited.
