Environmental permitting for combustion activities

Find out if your facility needs an environmental permit and how to apply.

Do I need to apply for a permit?

Combustion activities listed in Section 1.1, Part (A) 1 of Schedule 1 of the Environmental Permitting Regulations will normally require an environmental permit issued by the Environment Agency.

This section includes:

  • combustion appliances with an aggregated rated thermal input of greater than 50MW, or
  • appliances with a rated thermal input of greater than 3MW which burn fuel manufactured from, or comprising, waste (unless they are carried on as part of a Part B activity, in which case they will normally fall to the Local Authority for regulation).

Further information is given in Regulatory Guidance Series EPR 2 Understanding the meaning of regulated facility. You can download a copy of this from our Regulatory Guidance series web page:

How to apply for a permit

We have two types of permit available, standard and bespoke. The majority of operations in this sector will need a bespoke environmental permit.

Part A(1) combustion activities regulated by the Environment Agency will require a bespoke environmental permit.
