How we manage groundwater

Our water resources are not just our rivers, lakes and reservoirs. Our largest resources are underground.

The Environment Agency has a duty to manage the use of this groundwater, balancing the need to supply consumers with the need to preserve the environment, protect it from pollution and over-abstraction and where it is already polluted to clean it up. We achieve this through:

  • Promoting Sustainable Development
  • Legislation and Regulation
  • Information and Education
  • Investigation and Monitoring
  • Research
