How we manage groundwater

Our water resources are not just rivers, lakes and reservoirs. Our largest resources are underground.

The Environment Agency has a duty to manage the use of groundwater. We balance the need to supply consumers with the need to preserve the environment, protect it from pollution and over-abstraction, and where it is already polluted we clean it up. We achieve this by:

  • promoting sustainable development
  • legislation and regulation
  • information and education
  • investigation and monitoring
  • research

Our GP3 document describes how we manage and protect groundwater, both now and for the future.
