Simple exemptions

Find out which waste handling activities don't need an Environmental Permit

A simple exemption is a waste handling activity that is exempt from requiring an Environmental Permit and which is relatively low risk.

Each exemption listed below has a paragraph number and a one line description of the activity that it covers. See each link for:

  • a full description of that exemption
  • guidance about what it means.

You are provided with instructions on how to register this exemption if you intend to undertake the activity. There is no charge for the registration of these waste activities.

You must be the occupier of the land where the activity is carried out or have the consent of the occupier before you give us notice of any of these exempt activities.

Recovery or reuse

  • Paragraph 4 - Cleaning, washing, spraying or coating of waste packaging and containers
  • Paragraph 5 - Burning waste as a fuel in an exempt appliance
  • Paragraph 8 - Secure storage of sludge
  • Paragraph 11 - Treatment of waste for the purpose of recovery
