Nuclear sector plan

Find out about the nuclear sector plan and the industry's performance against it.

We've published the second version of our nuclear sector plan after working jointly with the nuclear industry to develop it.

This revised version of the plan builds on the successes of the first sector plan (originally published in 2005), looks ahead to forthcoming challenges and reflects important changes in the nuclear industry.

The plan details environmental objectives and indicators of performance that will help ensure environmental impacts are minimised and managed responsibly.

The plan includes:

  • an outline of the eight environmental objectives for the nuclear sector;
  • voluntary activities which will be carried out by the industry, over and above their statutory responsibilities; and
  • areas where we've agreed to improve our work as an environmental regulator.

We will continue to report annually against the plan’s objectives. We are very pleased that the industry is continuing to support the sector plan and will continue to use it to monitor and report on the environmental impact of its activities.

Nuclear sector plan performance reports

The nuclear sector plan is supported by annual reports which measure the performance of the nuclear sector against the objectives and performance indicators set out in the nuclear sector plan.

We published the third report describing the environmental performance of the nuclear sector in 2008 in December 2009 (see below).

We’ll publish the next performance report with data from 2009 towards the end of 2010.

2008 performance

Overall, the environmental performance of the sector was again good during 2008, with improvements against previous performance in a number of areas. Despite this progress, continued focus will be required to improve environmental performance in some areas.
