Leachate treatment

Here you can find out how to make an environmental permitting application for leachate treatment activities and see the guidance available.

Leachate treatment and Environmental Permitting

The Environmental Permitting (EP) Regulations came into force on 6 April 2008. These new regulations combine the Pollution Prevention and Control (PPC) and Waste Management Licensing (WML) regimes.  If anything that you do was covered by the PPC regime, then the new Environmental Permitting Regulations apply to you.

Your existing PPC permit will automatically have become an Environmental Permit on 6 April. You do not need to reapply and we will not reissue your permit. Your permit will contain the same conditions as before.

Our new application form and guidance on how to complete the form is available from our Environmental Permitting web pages.

All customers who wish to submit an application under the new regulations must apply using the new forms.

Guidance available

During 2006, we consulted on IPPC S5.03 - Technical Guidance for the Treatment of  Hazardous and Non-Hazardous Landfill Leachate.

Following the consultation, the document has been updated and the final version (and the consultation version) can be downloaded below.

The final version is too large to be downloaded as one file and has been split into two parts.

Meeting Industry

On 27 March we met with operators of leachate treatment facilities to discuss the questions in Part B of the standard application form. The documents below contain:

  • the meeting minutes
  • agreed appropriate answers to Part B questions
  • facility diagrams.
