As part of our chemicals strategy we have developed a screening method to help us identify which chemicals may need investigating further as a priority.

Through screening, we assess a chemical based on:

  • its hazardous properties
  • the chance of it being exposed to the environment

When we developed these hazard and exposure criteria, we tried to be consistent with criteria being developed as part of other internationally agreed initiatives to make sure we have a common approach.

We have used this approach to identify substances that need investigating further as part of national and EU initiatives.
