Environmental permitting for textile treatment activities

Do I need to apply for a permit?

Companies that treat textiles will need a bespoke environmental permit to operate any activity listed in Section 6.4 Part A(1) (b) or (c) of Schedule 1 of the Environmental Permitting Regulations. 

This section includes:

  • Pre-treating operations (such as washing, bleaching, mercerisation) or dyeing fibres or textiles in a plant with treatment capacity of more than 10 tonnes per day;
  • Treating textiles if the activity may result in the release of a substance to water as specified in paragraph 7 of Part 1 of the Environmental Permitting Regulations.
