Guidance and support for farmers in Nitrate Vulnerable Zones in England to help you comply with the current Action Programme.
Information on this page relates to the current Action Programme in England, which began in 2009. A new Action Programme will come into force in May 2013; this page will be updated when information is available.
You can download guidance leaflets describing the rules farmers in nitrate vulnerable zones (NVZs) must follow from Defra's website, or by phoning the Defra Library on 020 7238 6575.
We have produced some questions and answers, and some detailed fact sheets on NVZs to supplement the main guidance described above:
PLANET nutrient management is a free computer program developed by ADAS (an independent provider of environmental solutions, rural development services and policy advice) with funding from the Environment Agency and Defra. It provides extra help with some of the calculations required under the new rules.

Tried and tested nutrient management plan
Industry (AIC, FWAG, LEAF, NFU and CLA) and the England Catchment Sensitive Farming Delivery Initiative (ECSFDI) has worked together to deliver a second edition of the tried and tested nutrient management plan. It will also help you meet the latest NVZ regulations:
2010 farmer survey
In 2010 we conducted a farmer survey with Ipsos-MORI. We wanted to understand how effective Defra and us have been in communicating information about NVZs. We conducted a 15-minute telephone survey among 750 farmers, and ten in-depth interviews.
The research found that most farmers think there is a lot of helpful advice available for farmers in NVZs. However, it also found that some farmers remain unaware of their NVZ designation.
