Small users liaison group (SULG)

‘Small users' are organisations using radioactivity who are not part of the UK’s nuclear industry.

Some small users are actually large multinational companies. But most are universities, National Health Service Trusts, pharmaceutical companies and small or medium sized manufacturing businesses.

The Small Users Liaison Group

We set up the Small Users Liaison Group (SULG) in 1995 as a forum for small users and the Environment Agency to talk about issues of mutual interest. These include matters around the Radioactive Substances Act, other regulations and exemption orders. The forum also allows small users to air their concerns and for us to consult them on our plans.

Group meetings are chaired by Bob Russ, our Policy Manager for Radioactive Substances Regulation and attended by other staff, who sit on the group, including Amber Bannon (Technical Secretary), Chris Englefield (Process Manager Non-nuclear) and Arnold John (Dales Area RSR Officer).

Other members represent small users:

Defra, the Health and Safety Executive (HSE) and Welsh Assembly Government also attend the meetings, held twice a year in June and December.

If you would like copies of the minutes of these meetings, please email the Technical Secretary: amber.bannon@environment-agency.gov.uk
