Landfill Allowances and Trading Scheme results

The Landfill Allowances and Trading Scheme sets a limit on the amount of biodegradable municipal waste that each unitary and waste disposal authority in England can send to landfill. The landfill allowance allocations reduce every year, and we monitor how well the authorities perform.

We report about each scheme year by November, after trading ends on 30 September. The aim of the scheme is to meet the three Landfill Directive targets. In doing so this will reduce the negative effects on the environment.

All local authorities in England have met their landfill allowances for the first two years of the scheme. The report for 2006/07 is available here:
