Landfill Allowance Schemes

We have introduced two schemes to reduce the amount of municipal waste sent to landfill in England and Wales.

The schemes reduce the amount of biodegradable municipal waste (BMW) that can be sent to landfill sites each year. This will assist the UK meeting its targets under the Landfill Directive.

What is municipal waste?

DEFRA (Department of Environment and Rural Affairs) and WAG (Welsh Assembly Government) have issued joint guidance on what municipal waste is for the purposes of the Landfill Allowances Schemes.
