Regional Flood and Coastal Committees (RFCCs)

Executive committees through which the Environment Agency performs its flood and coastal erosion function in the South West.

The Regional Flood and Coastal Committee (RFCC) is a committee established by the Environment Agency under the Flood and Water Management Act 2010 that brings together members appointed by Lead Local Flood Authorities (LLFAs) and independent members with relevant experience for three purposes:

  • To ensure there are coherent plans for identifying, communicating and managing flood and coastal erosion risks across catchments and shorelines
  • To promote efficient, targeted and risk-based investment in flood and coastal erosion risk management that optimises value for money and benefits for local communities
  • To provide a link between the Environment Agency, LLFAs, other risk management authorities, and other relevant bodies to engender mutual understanding of flood and coastal erosion risks in its area.

South West Region has two RFCCs:

  • Wessex RFCC covers Somerset, Dorset, Bristol, most of Wiltshire and part of Gloucestershire and Hampshire.
  • South West RFCC covers Devon and Cornwall.

Members of the public and press are welcome to attend committee meetings as non-participatory observers.

Membership opportunity

Could you help us to reduce the risk communities face from flooding and your local environment?

We welcome applications from individuals who want to make a valuable contribution to protecting communities and the environment as a member of our South West or Wessex Regional Flood and Coastal Committees.

We are looking to recruit the following members:

South West RFCC: two members to represent agriculture, farming and land management

Wessex RFCC: one member to represent each of the following interests - agriculture, farming and land management; nature conservation and wider environmental issues; inland flooding issues.

We would be pleased to hear from you if you feel you have the knowledge and skills to represent these interests.

Committee member positions are non-salaried, although members are entitled to claim travel expenses and, in some cases, subsistence and financial loss allowance.

If you are interested in applying please return the committee application form to Sarah Harding by 24 May 2012.
