Commodity Guidance
Guidance on commodities purchased by the Agency has been produced in areas such as IT, Aggregates, Sand, Electronics etc. This has been researched from publicly available information and pulled together to form information documentation. These detail information on the life cycle processes, environmental and ethical impacts. Furthermore, potential mitigation measures are also identified for purchasers to action.
The specific product / service guidance is sub-divided into two complimentary elements, one a general overview of the environmental risks, issues, potential mitigation measures and sources of further information. This section also identifies the potential of developing world supply chains. Each guide works through a simple Life Cycle Assessment of the commodity in question and gives a number of actions that can be taken to control impacts at each stage. Secondly, where appropriate more detailed information is provided should the Buyer need to more fully explore the specific environmental issues associated with the product.
These documents are aimed at giving Agency staff guidance in managing and reducing the environmental and ethical impacts of purchases whilst also highlighting the potential ethical supply chain risks. They also aim to structure thought and ask questions regarding legislation, pressure groups and developing world supply chain risks. These are quite complex issues but provide the basis to support staff in driving the sustainability agenda in specifications and with suppliers.
