Our corporate strategy
Creating a better place
We published our environmental vision in 2000.
We cannot achieve our vision all at once – this strategy says how we’ll build on our success so far and continue to work towards our vision over the next five years. "Creating a better place" covers the period 2006 to 2011.
We cannot achieve our vision alone – this strategy says how we’ll work ourselves and with others, and how we’ll continue to change over the next five years.
What we want
We have a vision for the environment: a better place for people and wildlife, for present and for future generations.
To achieve our vision, we'll work towards nine environmental goals.
We want:
- a better quality of life for people
- an enhanced environment for wildlife
This means we need to protect and improve the environment by providing:
- cleaner air for everyone
- improved and protected inland and coastal waters
- restored, protected land with healthy soils
To do this, we also need to make some major changes and help everybody achieve:
- a greener business world
- wiser sustainable use of natural resources
And we need to manage two very real risks by:
- limiting and adapting to climate change
- reducing flood risk
How we will do it
To achieve these goals, we’ll carry out five roles.
We will:
- work directly to tackle environmental problems as an efficient operator
- work with businesses as a modern regulator to help them reduce their effect on the environment
But we can't do it all ourselves. We also need to:
- be an influential adviser and an effective partner, persuading others to act and to work with us
- highlight the problems facing the environment and explain the need for action as an active communicator
And we will:
- be the champion of the environment (in the context of sustainable development) and advise on environmental issues, whilst taking account of economic and social issues
