We have two main roles to play with the education sector:
- We work with local authorities to inform and prepare schools at direct flood risk by working with them to create school flood plans to protect staff and pupils from flooding.
- We aim to raise flood risk awareness amongst pupils by influencing the Welsh Joint Education Committee (WJEC) Curriculum to ensure that flooding is covered through taught Geography lessons in schools.
We worked with Maindee Primary School in Newport to help raise awareness of flood risk in the classroom. We visited the school and held a workshop where children could learn about the dangers of flooding, and learn practical information about how to prepare a flood kit.
We also took part in the school's annual summer festival and parade, raising awareness of the flood risk to the area and providing parents with information and advice. In conjunction with these awareness raising activities, we also worked closely with the head teacher of the school to ensure that all staff and pupils are now protected by a school flood plan.
